Decline code 61: exceeds withdrawal amount limit

Soft decline (retryable) Monitored by PaymentRetryAlert

What decline code 61 means

The transaction would push the cardholder past a daily, per-transaction or period spending limit set by the issuer. Common on debit and prepaid cards. Funds may exist, but the limit blocks the charge today.

Should you retry?

Retryable once the limit window resets, typically the next day. Covered by PaymentRetryAlert monitoring alongside code 51.

Retry on signal, not on schedule. This is one of the declines Mastercard's Payment Optimization Platform monitors. When the network sees that a retry is more likely to approve, PaymentRetryAlert delivers a signed RETRY_NOW webhook so you can retry through your existing processor at the right moment. See the full guide to insufficient-funds declines.
