Decline code 57: transaction not permitted to cardholder
What decline code 57 means
The card is not enabled for this kind of transaction, for example a card that cannot be used for recurring, card-not-present or cross-border payments.
Should you retry?
Do not retry. Ask for a different card. The restriction is set on the card by the issuer.
Retrying hard declines costs money. Visa limits reattempts on a card to 15 in 30 days, and Mastercard charges for attempts beyond its thresholds and for every retry after a Merchant Advice Code 03 or 21. Route this decline to account updater or customer outreach instead. See soft vs hard declines.
